How it Works

Getting Started

Our attempt is to make SpotLaw App easy to navigate and intuitive to use. We follow design thinking approach when creating the user interface. If you find it difficult or have suggestions for improvements, do not hesitate to contact us with your feedback.

1. Visit Google Play Store or Apple Store and search for ``Spotlaw App``. You will find the following selection:

2. Select the Spotlaw App as per the following details

3. Download and install the SpotLaw App. The following screen will appear once installation is complete

4. When you open the app, following screen will appear. Enter the details to register (your screen may look different from what's shown below). If you have already registered, then click on 'login' link to login

5. Enter your e-mail address and password to login. If you have forgotten your password, you can click on 'forgot password' to retrieve it via registered e-mail

6. Once you have successfully installed and registered, you will find the Spotlaw Icon on the mobile phone screen

7. When you open on the Spotlaw app, you will see the following home screen showing latest judgements

8. To narrow down the list of judgements in view, enter filter words in the ‘Filter by Keyword’ box

9. Word Search: If you click on the search button on the extreme right of the ‘Filter by Keyword’ bar, you will go to ‘Word Search’ page, with a Search button (example used 'Rajasthan')

10. If you click on the Search button, you will get all the judgments in the text of which, the word ‘Rajasthan’ has occurred

11. On the top left of the Judgment Details band, you will find an icon to go Back to the searches you have already made. On the top right you will find a Menu Icon. Below this band you will find a box, displaying the Name of the case and the Date of the judgment as follows:

12. On the extreme top right below this box you will find the following icon to download the Text of the Judgment. This icon is enabled when the PDF of the judgement is available in the expected format. You can download and view the PDF by tapping on this icon. All the judgments have been uniformly formatted with running para numbers. This is an internationally accepted practice for Neutral Citation as it helps referring to the relevant portions of the judgment.

13. Next to the Download icon on the left you will find the Bookmark icon. Tao on this icon to add to an existing library or create a new one

14. When you will click on the Bookmark Icon, you will get the option to create a new collection or use an existing collection. Think of these collections as your personal library of the judgements you want to access quickly. All the judgments bookmarked by you will continue to be automatically updated with the latest judgments in which the said judgment has been referred etc. Your collections are private to you

15. Non highlighted Bookmark Icon means that the judgment has not been bookmarked. A highlighted Bookmark Icon means that the judgment has been bookmarked by you

16. If you select the judgment Supreme Court Advocate on Record Association (SCAORA) Vs. Union of India you will find that the same has two (2) Follow Up till date. You will get the following display:

17. In the judgment of Supreme Court Supreme Court Advocate on Record Association (SCAORA) Vs. Union of India you will find the following Coram:

18. If you click on the name of the judge in the Coram of Judges, you will get all the judgments of that particular Judge. Example – If you click on Jagdish

19. Statute index with Articles, Sections, Rules etc. referred in that judgment – Below the Follow in you will find the Statute Index as follows:

20. Statute Index gives you list of all the Acts, Rules, Regulations etc. along with the Articles, Sections, Rules etc. referred in that judgement. As you will click on any Articles, Sections, Rules etc. of any Acts, Rules, Regulations etc. you will get all the judgments of Supreme Court with reference to that.

21. Subjects, Issues and Decisions referred in that judgment. As you scroll down, you will get all the subjects, Issues and decisions which arise in that case.

22. Landmark Judgments: Each year some of the judgments given by Supreme Court become landmark judgments because of the issue involved or a new principle of law laid down by Supreme Court.

23. Judgment by Judges: As you select the Judges on the main bar, you will get the list of all the judges of Supreme Court, along with the number of judgments delivered by each judge –

24. The moment you will click on the name of the judge, you will get the list of all the judgments of which he was a member. Example –A.M.Ahmadi J. was a member of judgments of Supreme Court

25. If you are looking for judgment to L. Chandra Kumar V. Union of India by Justice, delivered by A.M. Ahamadi J, you can give the same in the filter, you will immediately get the same -

26. Search – If you wish to make a search of judgments on basis of any of the multiples defined search, you can use this icon. As you click the search icon and click the dropdown button in the Search By, box you will get the following search parameters:

Appellant - If you know the name of the Appellant or Petitioner and wish to search the judgment on that basis, select the Appellant from the drop own menu and enter the name of the Appellant or Petitioner in the box and click on Search Button. You will get all the judgments in which the word occurs in the name of the Appellant.

28. You will get the list of all the Judgments in which Subramanian Sway was an Appellant. You can click on any one of the judgments to get the judgment details.

29. Respondent – If you know the name of the Respondent and wish to search the judgment on that basis, select the Respondent from the drop own menu and enter the name of the Respondent in the box and click on Search Button. You will get all the judgments in which the word occurs in the name of the Appellant.

30. Click on Search, you will get all the Judgements in which Delhi Development Authority is a Respondent. You can thereafter scroll down the name to get the relevant judgment or filter the name by keyword, select the judgment and get all the Judgment Details:

Citation: If you have the Citation and is searching for the judgment details with respect to the same, you can use the citation search and enter the citation in your hand and click the Search Button. Immediately you will get the link to the desired judgment. Example: If you give 2001 INSC 0001 as the citation. You can also enter partial information, e.g. 2001 INSC

32. Word: If you wish to carry out word search on multiple words or a term, you can enter the same separated by comma and click search button. If you give words like murder, rape, life imprisonment in the word like this and click the search button. You can also enter phrases separated by comma

33. Date: You can use this feature if you are searching for any judgment between two dates. When you click on the Date, you will get the following screen

34. Browse – When you will select the Browse Button, you will get the following screen

35. Considered by Supreme Court in drop down menu. The bracket gives you the number of statutes referred and considered by Supreme Court in its judgments

36. As you enter the name of the Statute, the list will scroll down to take you to the relevant statute. Example, if you give Constitution of India, you will get the following Screen. It shows various statutes by the name Constitution and the number of Articles considered under each Statute. Under each statute you will find the number of judgments which have considered Articles of Constitution. Under one judgment multiple articles of constitution are considered.

37. If you select Consitution of India, you will find the following screen. This gives you various judgments under each Article. Under Article 1 are 15 judgments, under Article 2 are 11 judgments. As you click on any of the Article , it will give you all the judgments in which that Article is referred or condsidered.

38. Subject: If you wish to search judgments on the basis of its subject or on the basis of a particular Act, you can use this icon with the heading ‘Subject’. As you click the subject heading icon, you will get the following search parameters based on various subjects and Acts in force in India.

39. Criminal Law: If you select ‘Criminal Law’ from list of subjects, you will get the following screen, which shows all the judgments specifically in the subject of ‘Criminal Law’. After clicking on any specific subject, the list of issues in the same gets opened.

40. Issue: Death, If you make a search regarding a particular issue in the list of subjects available, click on the subject and you will find a host of issues stated under that subject in the form of a list.

41. Decision: After viewing the list of issues and selecting the required issue for the legal research, all the specific types of decisions regarding the specific legal issue chosen is displayed with the number of judgments for each aspect of the selected issue.

42. List of Judgment: After selecting the required type of decision for a particular legal issue, the judgments regarding that decision is displayed on the screen.

43. Chatbot giving you information about Supreme Court of India: At the right bottom of the screen you will see a Chatbot Icon. This is the first legal Chatbot which gives you all the information about Supreme Court. This is the first application of AI to law. As you continue to ask questions, more and more information will continue to come.
